on the river again, aka sloatfest preview #2
15 of us met up in Utah, back at the end of July, for a canyoneering/float-trip that we affectionately dubbed Sloatfest (the name Slotfest had already been taken.) Two months after the fact, I finally got around to playing with the all the footage…here’s the second of many gems I found. This clip was taken just SW of Moab, at the put-in on the Colorado River, at the end of Potash Rd. Vocals and paddling provided by JP.

boomsticks, aisle 10. boomsticks, aisle 10. (aka sloatfest preview #1)

Two months after the fact, I finally got around to playing with the all the footage…here’s the first of many gems I found. This clip was taken late at night in the Moab supermarket, after a long evening of drinking at the brewery, amid somewhat frantic shopping for 4 days of food. That’s Jeff “boomsticks” Purton on the intercom. Wait for it…

GTCR work week movie
I spent the first 10 days of June at the Grand Teton Climbers’ Ranch, a place near and dear to my heart, at the base of the Grand Teton, in northwestern Wyoming. The GTCR is run by the American Alpine Club as sort of a rustic hostel/hangout spot for climbers who are either gearing up for, winding down from, or settling in for long days in the big mountains. Because of the harsh weather in that corner of Wyoming (I got snowed on this year), the ranch is only open from June through September; and because of its slim operating budget, the ranch depends on the labor of volunteers for its maintenance. That’s why I was there. Every year a couple dozen climbers, ex-climbers, wanna-be climbers, kids-of-climbers, and others convene to donate 5 days of good ole fashioned manual labor and get the place up and running. It’s called work week, and it involves everything from roofing to painting to trail-building to creaky-door-repair. (In return for 5 days of labor, you get 5 days of breakfast and lunch, and free lodging for the month.)
I brought my camera out with me this year (I’ve spent parts of 7 summers climbing at the ranch), and tried to capture snippets of what was going on at work week… You’ll see climbers young and old; climbers in climbing shape and others nowhere near it. Some have been there since the beginning (back in ‘71 or ‘72), while others are just discovering the place. And a couple people who’ve abandoned their homes and careers and are busy reflecting on life, because they find more meaning there, away from it all, among real friends, than they do where they came from.
So, without further ado, my second Goatless Production…GTCR Work Week, 07

Goatless Productions proudly presents: SLOTFEST ‘06 – the movie
At long last, I’ve finished a rough-cut of SLOTFEST ‘06, the grandest yet of our many Utah canyoneering adventures.
It began not so very long ago, back in October, 2006, when 17 of us met up near Hanksville, UT, with a shit-ton of beer and a large collection of wetsuits….
Check out the movie

VIDEO: a little canyoneering fun
A dozen of us went out to southern Utah last April and had a bunch of fun in some easier canyons. This here is the PG-rated preview of Slotfest, the 45-minute movie we made about another Utah trip in October… (The song is “King Without a Crown,” by Matisyahu)
